I recently picked up a book by an author I’d never heard of, but the blurb hooked me. You know how it goes—something about it whispered this could be good, so I thought, why not?
The book itself? Not bad. Kept me interested. Solid “okay” read.
But let’s talk about the real plot twist… and no, it wasn’t in the story.
It was the main character’s life choices.
So here we have a woman with:
- A college degree
- A solid job in marketing
- An agent (which, okay, nice flex)
- And dreams of becoming a published author
All good so far.
Now here’s where things take a turn.
She quits her job… before her book is even looked at by a publisher.
I’m sorry...what?
I had to pause.
Now listen, I am all for chasing dreams. Truly. Quit your job if:
- You’ve got savings
- You’ve got a deal
- You’ve got a plan
- You’ve got something resembling stability
But quitting your job when your manuscript hasn’t even been reviewed yet?
That’s not even a leap of faith. That’s a full-on sprint off a cliff.
And here’s the thing that really got me—she was in marketing. MARKETING. You mean to tell me she had the skills to literally market her own book, build a brand, self-publish, and start making money…
…and instead chose unemployment and vibes?
Bold. So bold.
Could it work? Sure. Anything could work.
But would most people do that in real life?
I’m gonna go with a very confident no.It didn’t ruin the story for me, but every time it came up, I found myself less focused on the plot and more like, “Does she at least have a backup plan? A side hustle? A rich aunt??”
Overall, decent read. Slightly questionable decision-making.
But hey—maybe the real lesson here is this:
Confidence is great. Delusion… occasionally makes for entertaining fiction.

HAHAH omgosh that character already drives me nuts and i have no idea what the book is.
ReplyDeleteI'll never forget when I first got engaged to Dave and we talked about if I would ever take a sabbatical from teaching to stay home with a chilld until she was in kindergarten. He said " you never have to worry about me just quitting a job and not having a plan B. If i have to sling burgers and bag groceries until the next computer gig i will". He got that from his dad! We believe in working. Sure wish I hadn't had to retire earlier than I wanted but hey......I'm also not trying to publish a book!
