POV Rant: The Redundancy Olympics

Argghhhhhh. POV!!! You know what grinds my writerly gears? When someone writes, “She shook her head no” or “He nodded his head yes.”

WHY. JUST WHY.

We all passed Basic Human Gestures 101, right? Nodding is yes. Shaking is no. You don’t have to spell it out like we’re playing charades with a confused alien.

Writers, do yourselves (and your readers) a favor—trust the gesture. Drop the “yes” and “no” like yesterday’s adverbs. Because saying “He nodded his head yes” is the literary equivalent of saying “I blinked my eyes” or “I walked on my feet.”

We get it. You’re thorough. But let’s not be redundantly ridiculous, okay?

End rant. Mic drop. Nods head (see what I did there?)

  3. I laughed while ready this because I notice, but don’t notice at the same time. I would probably be the type of person to write it all out if I was a writer 😂
